Look at the green line! Both bars end at the exact same spot. When you cut each 1/3 piece into 2 slices, you now have 6 pieces in the whole bar, and your 2 pieces became 4 slices.

The Equivalence Rule

Multiplying the numerator and denominator by 2 is like multiplying by 2/2 (= 1 whole)! The fraction keeps the exact same value.

Why it works:

Numerator (Shaded pieces): You had 2 pieces. Slicing by 2 gives 2 × 2 = 4 shaded pieces.

Denominator (Total in Whole): The whole bar had 3 pieces. Slicing by 2 gives 3 × 2 = 6 total pieces.

Conclusion: Because every piece was divided equally, 2/3 and 4/6 are equal.
